Black or dark circles under or around the eyes can be caused by many different factors. The following are the most common causes of those unattractive dark circles. I also added other possible factors such as cold or sinus infection, bone structure and glasses which are not so commonly known.
Heredity
Like varicose veins, dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait. If you have dark circles, there is a good chance that others in your family also have them. The skin under the eye is very thin. When blood passes through the large veins close to the surface of the skin it can produce a bluish tint. The more transparent your skin, also an inherited trait, the darker the circles appear.
Allergies, Asthma and Eczema
Any condition that you have that causes your eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles under the eyes because rubbing or scratching the skin can darken the skin. Hay fever sufferers particularly will notice under-eye “smudges” during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.
Medications
Any medications that you are taking that causes blood vessels to dilate, can cause circles under the eyes to darken. Because the skin under the eyes is very delicate, any increase blood flow shows through the skin.
Nutrition
The lack of nutrients ( e.g. iron, Vit K)in the diet, or the lack of a balance diet, can contribute to the discoloration of the area under the eyes.
Fatigue, Lack of Sleep
A lack of sleep or excessive tiredness can cause paleness of the skin, which again allows the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear more blue or darker.
Pregnancy and Menstruation
The skin can also become more pale during pregnancy and menstruation, which again allows the underlying veins under the eyes to become more visible.

Age
If you have a propensity to have dark circles under you eyes, as you grow older, they are likely to become more noticeable and permanent. Excess folds of skin under the eyes will also make dark circles more pronounced.
Blood Circulation
Another cause may be bad blood circulation. Cardio exercise increases blood circulation and may help the dark circles to disappear.
Kidney or Liver problems
The area directly located under the eyes are close related to kidneys and liver, so the appearance of dark circles may indicate problems or weakness in the kidney or liver activity.
Exposure To The Sun
Even in darker skinned people, exposure to sunlight, especially during the summer months, can cause a higher-than-normal level of skin pigmentation (melanin) under the eyes. People get sun tans because exposure to the sun increases the natural pigmentation of the skin and draws that pigmentation to the surface. The same principle applies to the skin under the eyes.
Cold or Sinus Infection
Superficial blood vessels in the skin can lead to dark circles under the eyes. A cold or sinus infection increases pressure on these blood vessels, which makes it even more likely that dark circles will appear.
Dehydration
Dark eye circles could be a sign of excessive loss of water from the body.
Bone structure
If you have deep-set eyes, shadowing contributes to the dark color under the eyes.
Glasses
The weight of the glasses may cause bad blood circulation around the eyes.

Thank you for the information. I am plagued what gentics have given me - those nasty dark circles! My Mom has them as well as my sister, but really I am not too concerned about them. When asked if I am getting enough sleep amd such or if I am lacking any nutrients, I just blatantly tell the inquirer that they are a gift my Mom handed down to me.
I do not let it bother me, as they are a part of me, and I can accpet that.

hi traci,
currently i’m still on my way doing some research and as most people (me 2) believe that dark circles as heredity, there are alot of cases where their dark circles are heal when they change their diets (avoid dairy, gluten). I will try to post more info about it later. thanks for dropping by.

I also suffer from deep dark circles under my eyes. My wife always knows if I didn’t sleep enough or working late at night. Lately I have been getting plenty of rest but still working. I was introduced to this product which I have been using and so far so good. I’m not as tired and my wife says the circles aren’t as visible as before.

I have dark circles under my eyes too and they got worse when i turn 20. One thing I notice is that when I eat less sugar that day they will look paler, and vice versa. I am wondering if I am suffering from Candida infection coz the fungus should not be killed/starved just because I eat less sugar for one day. Does it has anything to do with adrenal exhaustion? Anyone?

I’ve had dark circles all my life and believe that herdity has much to do with them. I do a lot of genealogy research, esp. interested in finding any Indian background, and have read that American Indians commonly have dark circles. I assume that this would also pertain to Asians since Indians are of the Mongoloid race.

Thanks for the info.
I’m 24. I have always had slight dark circles (no puffiness/bags, just ‘black eyes’ or ‘panda eyes’) and they are getting worse. I can hide them a bit with concealer but its never good enough. The factors above ring true- hereditary, bone structure (my eyes are deepset), skin (my skin is dry and translucent), poor circulation and eczema. My brother has them too, I suspect his glasses makes them a bit worse- and of course he cant use makeup.
I hate people saying I look tired and ill! I long for a cure!
Vitamin K cream, injections…does anyone know what is good and available in the UK?
February 18th, 2007 at 8:39 am
What if you have the dark circles all the way around your eye…not just
underneath? I’ve had severe sinus problems all my life, and know that
it caused the dark bags underneath my eyes, but in just the last
year my eyes have become dark in the lids as well ????? Looks like I
used bluish eye shadow in the corner of my lid…when I didn’t.

I have highly visible blue veins below my eyes and blueish eyelids that are due mostly to heredity. I have been called a “heroin addict” and “AIDS patient” simply because of the way I look. It is difficult to believe that nothing can be done surgically to correct this problem. Yet, every doctor I asked have no answers. Still, I would like to thank the creator of this site for helping us find useful information. I hope you all find some way to overcome our problem.

i am 17 and have dark circles under my eyes and have recently had to have several blood tests done to find the underlying cause of it. i was told it can be anything from malnutrition, liver and kindey, thyrid, blood sugar levels or just sleep deprivation. hopefully they find the underlying cause as i am sick of the tired and exhuasted look!

i am nineteen and i have had the same problem all my life but no one in my family has the problem can anyone tell me what the cause might be
April 12th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
I am only 25 years old and I have developed dark circles around my eyes. I thought dark circles mostly occurred for middle-aged people.
I wonder exactly what could the exact problem be? Will Olay Regenerist Eye Serum help to clear the dark circles around my eyes?
April 13th, 2007 at 11:34 am
Hi, I have dark circles all around my eyes as well. I believe I started to get them when I was in like the 2nd or 3rd grade. When I was younger it was bad because I was much lighter then, then I am now. I remember people called me black eyes in middle school through highschool. It was horrible. My dad had dark circles around his eyes when he was younger but he does not have them anymore. I am not sure what the cause could be but I really want to get rid of them!

i have been plauged with dark puffy crcles all my life. a lor of peoople in my family have them. these are worse than normal peoples sleepy bags that go away when they get rest. i can get the greatest sleep ever and still look tierd and everyone comments on how tierd i look…it makes me feel so bad i can’t even look people in the eyes when i talk to them cus im so embarrassed!! Ive tried every cream from vit. K to all the eye serums, nothig has helped. I am hopign to get an eye lift when i can scrounge up the money, that will get rid of the bags but not the circles. does anyone know of a cream that thickens the skin underneath your eyes? ive also heard of lasers that can do something or lightening cream, but i dont see how lightening cream would help because the cause is under the skin. if anyone can help please do..i’m 24 and female and i feel so held back by this sick, old, tierd look. i want to look beautiful, healthy and young and be able to look at people and have them think my eyes are beautiful, not saggy and dark!

i am 14 years old and i have had dark(real dark) circles under my eyes my whole life. I am really desperate to get rid of them because as you figured out i go to school in which my peers ask me why i got socked in the eye. I am irritated. i have tried various eye creams ranging from cheap creams to expensive creams. i sleep for 9h a day and i have sufficient source of food and vitamins. dark circles are not part of heredity, and i have not got punched in the eye, yet these circles have been a daily routine of my life for as long as i can remember. my doctor hasn’t helped me, my parents have tried everything as well as me, yet nothing helps. someone plz advise quickly.

Exposure to the sun is often overlooked as a cause of dark circles and I was glad to see it mentioned here. Not only should a make up foundation iwth a good spf be used, but wearing a hat anytime one is outside helps cut exposure down.
When using a foundation as part of the screening strategy its important to choose one that is light weight. If you use mineral make up, the minerals are a physical barrier that has an approximate spf of 15, if I remmember correctly.
It is hard to remember EVERYTHING about any one beuaty issue!

Hi R. , are you sure it’s heredity because heredity normally means you got it when you were young.. If you are willingly to go for operation.. check out these two articles..

There are some hereditary / genetic conditions that do not assert themselves until one is much older. Some are associated with the aging process, which is predetermined but doesn’t become obvious until years after birth. Some genetic predispositions don’t assert themselves unless a specific chain of events occurs, like the early onset of rheumatoid arthritis.

Aghhhhhh i have the same problem… all start because of COMPUTER!!!! I took major in computer science in Uni, and it gave me this horrible dark circle. I have to do my projects everyday in front of my computer not less than 14 hours a day, and some times I only sleep for 5 hours a day. Now I’m working as a programmer… so I don’t think i can get rid of this panda eyes… :’( hix…. plus I lost my appetite if I’m under stress. I tried any kind of eye cream and it doesn’t work… All u need is Lancome concelear (effacernes longue tenue)+ Lancome macquicake 2 in 1 compact powder/foundation, this is the best product to cover the panda eyes so far, may be u can try.. good luck!
August 7th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
Actually even when i put make up it still shows that i have’em but they look less..thanks anyway n I hope ur circles go away somehow..good luck
August 7th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
If you are still having trouble applying concealer and getting good results, try watching the video clip on how to apply it.
Sometimes you fail to get good results with concealer because the concealer is formulated the wrong way. It should be either green or yellow to bring out your skin’s undertone. Also, switching from commercial creamy concealers and using Mineral Male up / loose powder concealers can make a huge difference because you can control the mount of make up you apply easier so that you don’t end up accenting your under eye circles and get better coverage.

Hey guys,
I have been plaugued with dark circles and puffyness around the eyes since i was about 20 years old, i am now 26 and i still cant get rid of them.
The worst thing about having bags under and around your eyes is that your eyes are such an important part of communicating socially and professionally, having dark circles has really reduced my confidence and esteem-for years friends and family always tell me i look so tired or stressed or ask if i have been sleeping late, some friends joke that im on drugs (which i dont do). I find it hard to make eye contact with people sometimes because of them and i find myself wearing glassess (not sunnies) to cover or slightly conceal them-when i look @ photos of myself before 20, there are no bags evident and i look so much more alive and vibrant. Some days the bags are lighter but on other days go go crazy dark-even if i have had plenty of sleep and am well hydrated, i have noticed that when i do get dehydrated they become more evident, i have never been a huge dairy guy and thought that perhaps its a calcium deficiency?? I have had minor mucus/sinus issues over the years and perhaps this is a correlation. I have studied a lot and now have a more demanding job, but so do many people and they dont have bags. I have darker skin (asian background) and do understand that people with darker skin will have more evident darker areas where skin is more bunched together but i know this is not the explanation for my problem as my puffyness and bags are very evident. I have tried expensive (for men) eye concealers and creams but they dont work. I am quite sure that in addition to stress and working hard, there must be something lacking in my diet-i have tried multivitamins (no effect).I am ruling out genetics for my case as the rest of my family do not have them.
For all those sufferers of dark circles-i feel for you!
October 4th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Hi Mase, thanks for dropping by.
Everyone feel the same here as we all struggle the same thing..
October 8th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Cold spoons, sliced potatoes, chemical formulas… nobody has a freaking clue how to fix dark circles do they? I mean it really doesn’t help me to know that they can be caused by 50 different things.
We know what the problem is - thin/delicate skin around the eyes. The people who don’t get dark circles… perhaps they don’t have skin as thin/delicate? Logic would then suggest that anything that THICKENS skin should alleviate the problem.
October 8th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
The fastest way to get rid of dark circles would be dark circles surgery ( then we would not need to use home remedies or eye creams ) but that’s pretty darn expensive ( about $9000 ) if you really want to get a good one .. not everyone could afford it though.. thus we search for alternatives..

November 5th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
what is the “dark circles” surgery?
January 23rd, 2008 at 11:56 am
Well, they’re not the most attractive things, but things could be a lot worse all things considered. I got concerned about mine when I was 16. I’m now 46, and let me tell you guys, it’s a lifelong situation, so just learn to love yourself now, get a good nights’ sleep, and relax. Go try every concealer product on the market and figure out what works for you - there are some great ones out there. Buy whatever you can afford on the new collagen eye circle creams, (I currently like L’Oreal - grey tube) and make concealing the circles part of your make-up routine. I’m a very active, sports oriented person that wears minimum make-up, but have found concealer is essential to my feeling good about myself. Most of all - it’s just who you are so don’t fight it so much. People will look past your eye circles if you have a great personality and aren’t insecure about it. But, make-up helps!

hey, i’m so glad that i have found this site!
i’ve had dark, really dark circles under my eyes since i was around 16 (im now 25) i use concealer almost daily to hide them but its starting to really get me down, its not something that i can just accept, there must be a way of getting rid of or at least reducing them. does anyone have photos cause i honestly dont believe that anyones are as bad as mine.
February 20th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Has anyone tried using self tanner to make circles less noticeable? I mean some might think that it would make them worse but if you are fair skinned like I am it might make them blend in somewhat better? I read that idea somewhere….just a thought
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Hello,
Let me 1st start with my history. I was 13 when I got this thing called as “Dark Circles” were I visited all sorts of doctors and tried all different medicines given by them. After a year I got so fade up that I just threw all the medicines. And didn’t care about the Dark circles. The miracle was that it vanished within next 3 months. I don’t know how!! I still haven’t got any clue!!
When I was 15, I slipped and had injury under my eyes. But I didn’t get the circle back.
Now I am 20 and the thing is I got a faint dark line under my left eye, where I was injured. Even the work load has increased becasue of demanding studies.
I am going to follow the following:
Start consuming meat
1) No computers for next 2 months.
2) 5 ltrs of water everyday
3) 2 fruits daily.
4) Eye excersice
5) 8 hrs of sleep
6) Solution of Glycrien and Lime juice.
7) Lots of eggs
Thats all, lets see if it goes, if not We always got “Dark Eye Surgery”
Thanks
March 24th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Wow…the 8 hours of sleep would be miracle for me and I am vegetarian so what would i put in place of the meat? I even stopped crying for a week..lol, did not help. However i went to the skin clinic and they said the circles should likely appear better after they zap all the veins under my eyes, plus it stimulates collagen growth and then she has a good eye cream which she said is unlike what else is out there, that it works on another protein in the skin that the current eye creams do not. So after the zapping I will use the cream or serum, whatever it is. This skin lady said the laser could go up as high as the top of your under eye bone, (i confirmed this with my plastic surgeon whom i see for something else, to make sure it was not going to blind me) then she said they can even pull the skin down and zap that. If you pull your undereye gently, just a tiny little bit down you can see lots of veins you do not need. Even though they cannot be seen, they really are being seen as dark shadows. Now she said they will not be eliminated but they will improve because the capillaries part of the problem will be gone. There is another eye cream they featured on Montel called “T5″ in fact I think that is the one my skin doctor talked about. Skinmedica makes it. Also a mix of aloe. cucumber and chamomile is helpful, even if it is temporary but we always touch-up our make-up anyway, us girls anyway. I have heard MAC Studio Finish concealer is better than most concealers and was advised I should try that before trying the CoverMark or Dermalblend and if that works…super if not then try again. The problem with MAC is figuring out their colors, that is why going to a professional is important, it is free they just want you to buy the stuff when they are done messing with you, but you do not have to. So I will keep ya’ll updated and hopefully come back with good news and then ya’ll will have something to try. The laser is $200…ouch but I have wasted $1000s on eye creams so I am not terribly concerned, desperate is a better word. Those circles age me so bad. The rest of my skin is still like porcelain at 32 years old and it is very upsetting to have those circles there. They are not faint…otherwise I would not be so upset, they are prominent. Well anyway I yacked enough, will let you know how the zapping goes.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Also wanted to add that since that dark circle surgery is so new, eventually the price will start dropping somewhat, because doctors will be competing for business and most any new procedure in general starts out costing an arm and leg. So for those of you who are brave and desperate enough to try that surgery or who want it but do not have $9000 just be patient. I am going to have it, not anytime soon but I am saving. Try not to let anyone put you down either if you want to spend YOUR money on your eyes. The eyes are very important, it is the first thing some people look at when they see you and if yours are as bad as mine, I look like a coke addict or drunkard. I do not want people to think I a junkie. I get angry when people put their nose in my business regarding my eyes because when I look in the mirror they remind me everyday of what made them get so bad and that is domestic abuse, so I want them better. Well take care.
March 25th, 2008 at 3:23 am
Hi Bobbi, is the “dark eye circles surgery” that is costing $9000 refering to Dr Seckel’s eye rejuvunation surgery?
April 1st, 2008 at 8:38 am
Hi Everyone … I looked at the almighty Mayo’s clinic and it says as follows
Mayo Clinic dermatologist Lawrence Gibson, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
Answer
Almost everyone gets dark circles under their eyes from time to time. dark circles under eyes usually are temporary and not a medical concern.
You may be surprised to learn that fatigue usually isn’t the cause of dark circles. Instead, the most common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose is congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened (dilated) and darker.
Another cause of undereye circles is eyelid swelling during sleep. When you lie down, gravity can cause fluid to collect in your lower eyelids. This swelling may create the appearance of shadows below your eyes. In addition, dark circles can result from chronic skin conditions, such as atopic eczema. Dark circles can also run in families.
Over-the-counter products may help diminish dark circles under eyes. Look for skin creams that contain vitamin C or K, alpha hydroxy acid and kinetin. Treatment for chronic and severe undereye circles is directed at the underlying cause, if known, and may include bleaching agents and laser therapy.
Maybe this information can help someone.
Sincerely,
Heart

I’ve had dark circles around my eyes for quite a long time now. They have been on and off, some times are practically invisible, some other times i look like I’m a baseball player. Recently I’ve found that the more i sleep the better my circles look. I’ve always slept between 7 and 8 hours, but even though, i felt tired and sleepy waking up. When i started sleeping 9 and 10 hours (summer) i would wake feeling refreshed, new and to my surprise the dark spots below my eyes were almost completely gone.
All this really intrigued me, I researched a little and found out that sleep time varies from one individual to another. Some people need as little as 3-4 hours while others need as much as 10 hours of sleep. If u sleep less than what your brain needs u can induce sleep deprivation. The results go all the way from dark circles under the eyes, constant tiredness, loss of concentration, reduced mental performance to premature aging.
I guess this is were the phrase “beauty sleep” comes from.

I have the most awful hereditary dark circles and also feel constantly tired and sleepy mostly all of the time. I have IBS and am not sure of all the foods that affect me, so maybe that is making it worse, as I quite often lay awake feeling sick. There is a history of Thyroid probs in my family so maybe I should get checked. Also I seem to have an allergy to something as I sneeze lots and have itchy eyes, ears and throat. I really think the circles age me and make me look a mess.
I did look into having ‘filler’ injected into the hollow tear trough under the eyes but have not done anything about it yet, as its quite expensive. I have tried numerous creams and gels, but none seem to make a noticible difference.
Any suggestions? How are we going to win the war against the dark circles?!?

I found this in an article—dark circles might appear due to bone structure as well. If you have deep-set eyes, shadowing contributes to the dark color under the eyes.I have this prob. My eyes are a bit inside area than the face. I have got a deep blackish mark in da surface area (4m which the eye area starts).
I have heard abt laser toning. At home, infront of da mirror, if i lightly pull the skin of my eye area towrads the end (ear area), the marks seem to be light.
Should i go for laser toning? how effective is it? how long does it stay for?

I went to a doc for the prob- deep-set eyes along with dark circle. He suggested me dat i’l hav to go through fat drafting/implant procedure.
I just wanna kno this issue clearly. Does anyone kno whether it works or not? Whether it is a painful procedure? Will I be able to go to University right after the day of implant?
Plz help me out…

drink water(around 4 ltrs/day), eat green leafy vegetables, carrots, beetroot, and have high intake of Vitamin A, K, E and Iron. Please don’t take supplements w/o advice of doctor. Have atleast 6-10 Hrs of sleep. Exercise or walk for 30 mins continuously. It may help to reduce dark circles.
Impt: always pretend that your dark circles does not exist…

im a 30 yr old blk male i suffered with exetreme allergies as a child in my teenage years it got better they one day it was like i grew out of haveing the summer allgergy attacks(pets also).
then i begun have notice black circles around my eyes and they been getting worse,i like you have been asked rude questions by family members and friends about my eyes…why are they like that, are you sick, are you hittin the pipe….hell friggin no!!! but i do see one factor that must be helping me make my eyes worse…i smoke ALOT of weed 14 grams a week easy!thing is though since i started smoking my allergies stop bothering me,im winderiing if smoking that much weed for so long took a toll on my eyes…but then i look at other long time pot smokers and they dont got the racoon eyes.
though i smoke alot of weed im not a burn out that can’t think,i need to smoke weed for a diffrent medical but not life threating reason.
not prescribe by a doctuer by approved by a (srink)
can depresstion be a factor

I am 24 years old, and the lugguage keeps packing. I mean, I’m going on long vacations everyday. It’s either that, or I’m a ‘crackhead’.
Reality, I havn’t been on a trip in 2 years, and I don’t do drugs (well, crack at least) I had noticed these circles from when I was around 17, it seemed the baby fat wears off, and the skin thins under the eye. That is all it is! Thin Skin! Find a way to strengthen or thicken your skin under your eye.
Yes, ‘deep set’ eyes will emphasize bone structure, but closely, its thin skin!
Malnutrition, obviously, your thick skin isn’t there to cover the dark array.
Blood vessels bursting and repairing. they happen to everyone, its your thin skin!
imagine a bruise, that is what is going on under your eye. so it’s either you lighten your skin so its not ‘dark’ or thicken your skin so you can’t see it.
now, how do we thicken our skin, i have no clue. but im searching…until then, tell people to fuck off when have something to say about your eyes. or knock them out, and ask them how their eye is doing the next day. haha.

I am still having problems with dark circles around my eyes.
It’s mainly due to allergies, my mom also has them. I’ve been picked on throughout my entire life because of looking like I had a “black eye”
..and some people would call me rings and raccoon, I am in desperate need of a cure..it looks awful =/

“tell people to fuck off when have something to say about your eyes. or knock them out, and ask them how their eye is doing the next day”
What a brilliant idea! We should have the right to give anyone who comments on our circles a black eye
I get bugged at work by annoying people telling me what products they use on their eyes after a night out. They don’t even have dark circles.
I’ve had them since my late teens. Started off if I didn’t get enough sleep everyone could tell from my black eyes. Then gradually got worse until it doesn’t matter how much sleep I have they don’t go away completely.
I think mine is hereditary, courtesy of my dad and his side of family. One of my older sisters has it worse than me. I smoke which probably doesn’t help but then my sister has never smoked & hers are a lot worse than mine. But then her diet consists of bread, pasta, & more wheat. Maybe there is something to the diet thing.
I’m going to try & eat more greens, exercise, and drink loads of water
Problem is though if I eat healthier & lose weight, skin around my eyes will get thinner & eyes will look even darker.
I think I’ve come to the conclusion that no one’s perfect and after 10 years of dark circles I have finally found I am not alone thanks to this site.

I can completely relate. I’ve had dark circles since I was about 2. Now I’m 16 in high school and they’ve only gotten worse. Whenever people first meet me they usually ask about my dark circles. Normally I just try to patiently explain to them that i do get enough sleep, I wasn’t in a fight, I eat fine, and no I am not stressed.
Screw it though.
From now on, I’m just going to make it into some heroic story. I’m gonna say something like, “well, I guess that’s what you get for standing up for what you believe in.”
The people without dark circles should not give advice. They should shut up or suck it!
Sorry this is sort of a rant. It’s not really worth reading.
Thanks to whoever posted the blog about the mayo clinic. I think that may be my problem- nasal congestion. At least I hope it is. I’ll post again if i ever find a solution, which i will. There’s this guy that I like and i now really have motivation.
Good luck everyone. Let’s all try to hang in there because there has to be a solution out there, and i intend to find it.

I refuse to be 17 and never been kissed. That will not happen to me.
